The cabin is built with 3 x 20 foot shipping containers. The middle container is bolted to a cement block foundation using twist locks, and the two outer containers are cantilevered using lashing rods. He designed the cabin to take full advantage of the panoramic mountain view by covering almost an entire wall with windows, although he admits this is not the most energy efficient design. He's got 800 Watts of solar panels to power his 12-volt system for lights, outlets, and a water pump. Adam from HoneyBox (http://www.honeybox.ca/) built this stunning off-grid shipping container cabin on top of a mountain in British Columbia, Canada. He has a wood stove for heat, propane for the fridge, hot water, and cooktop, and he has a composting toilet from Sun-Mar. For water, he has a well and a rainwater catchment system, and he uses both to fill 2 large water tanks for showering and washing dishes but he doesn't yet have a filter for the rainwater and the well water is ferrous so he brings in drinking water for now. One of the main challenges of building with shipping containers is trying to avoid water leaks along the seams where the containers are joined together. Once the clamps are in place, there's a 3 inch gap between containers. Adam installed a mechanical gutter along the seams on the roof to divert water off the roof, and he has a second gutter underneath it to catch any leaks from the first gutter. So far he hasn't had any water issues. You can avoid leaks by building a roof over the containers. The cabin is insulated with spray foam insulation, which adheres to the steel walls and helps avoid condensation problems that might arise with fibreglass batts. Adam built this structure as a studio to demonstrate one of the many ways that shipping containers can be used to create unique living spaces. He doesn't live in it full-time. Testing Baofeng GMRS-V1 Radios on Mountain View Ranch BTECH GMRS-V1 GMRS Two-Way Radio at AMP-3.net http://bit.ly/2eF48Hg One of the most common questions I get on social media, email, and YouTube PM is if we are going to have a comms shack and antennas at Mountain View Ranch. The answer is ABSOLUTELY! Having good comms at the ranch only makes common sense. I have been hauling radio gear to the ranch on every trip. Unfortunately these trips have been quite busy and despite my overly optimistic plans to do some “radio videos” I often find my self driving home asking the question “Where did the time go?” On our last trip we had a small amount of extra time because I ran out of building materials for the barn. Good news was this gave me time to break out some radios to do some testing for comms on the ranch. In this video we got to test out some GMRS gear. GMRS stands for General Mobile Radio Service. More on this radio service will come in future videos. This is a good option on the ranch besause visiting family members can use the gear with my license and we can stay legal by getting helping friends get a licnense when they visit. The license is fee only with no test requirement something we can complete via the Internet when friends arrive. I look at GMRS as a gateway to ultimately getting a HAM radio license. I am sure friends will see the benefit of having communications capability and make the next step to get thier HAM radio license. Music Credit: Andrew Applepie Thanks for watching! Interviewed by Doug Fairbairn on 2017-02-14 in Mountain View CA, X8105.2017 © Computer History Museum Robert Lipp grew up in New York in a poor family. After getting a degree in electrical engineering, he went to work for Schlumberger, partially for the sense of adventure which they offered with work on the North Slope of Alaska. After finding the work at Schlumberger to be too technician-like, he found a job with Cogar in New York in 1970. This provided an introduction to semiconductors, which would the focus for his career. When Cogar closed its doors, Lipp moved onto Silicon Valley in 1972 and went to work for National Semiconductor. After a few months, it was on to Micro Power Systems, where he learned about CMOS design. After spending 2+ years, there he was looking for something more exciting and went to work for a new company called Integrated Circuits International, which was establishing one of the earliest IC fabs in Korea. This fab was later sold to Samsung as their first step into semiconductor manufacturing. After the sale Bob moved into what was then the new world of gate arrays, or semi-custom integrated circuits. He formed a company, California Devices, which was a pioneering company in this space. The company created some innovative ideas, but did not have the capital to compete with larger companies who came later to dominate the business. Lipp then helped start yet a couple of other companies, including Cross-Check Technology to solve the testing problem for semiconductors, and BrightLink, which came up with a very successful product, but was killed in the dot-com bust. But even that wasn’t the end, as he later helped develop a unique way to cool complex semiconductor based systems. Quite a varied and creative career!
