Unfortunately these trips have been quite busy and despite my overly optimistic plans to do some “radio videos” I often find my self driving home asking the question “Where did the time go?” On our last trip we had a small amount of extra time because I ran out of building materials for the barn. The cabin is built with 3 x 20 foot shipping containers. The middle container is bolted to a cement block foundation using twist locks, and the two outer containers are cantilevered using lashing rods. He designed the cabin to take full advantage of the panoramic mountain view by covering almost an entire wall with windows, although he admits this is not the most energy efficient design. More on this radio service will come in future videos. This is a good option on the ranch besause visiting family members can use the gear with my license and we can stay legal by getting helping friends get a licnense when they visit. The license is fee only with no test requirement something we can complete via the Internet when friends arrive. I look at GMRS as a gateway to ultimately getting a HAM radio license. I am sure friends will see the benefit of having communications capability and make the next step to get thier HAM radio license. Music Credit: Andrew Applepie Thanks for watching! http://www.novinium.com/ It is true that my beautiful wet skin is a disadvantage near electricity. That is why I let my journeyman lineman colleagues do most of the work. I am the brains and the beauty behind them. Click on the video link below where I demonstrate the greatest risk of rejuvenation -- and don't try this at home. Rejuvenation is inherently safer than replacement. When rejuvenating cable the electrical risk is the biggest risk by far. For a thorough description of all of the dimensions of rejuvenation safety, including even more about electrical contact, my colleagues, Rich and Glen provide an 84-page treatise, "A Comparison of Rejuvenation Hazards & Compatibility." That tome is available on-line at: www.novinium.com/pdf/papers/Rejuvenation_Hazards_Analysis.pdf. From that document I have copied the graph below. Don't worry there will not be a quiz and you do not need to pull out your reading glasses. The risks are enumerated and categorized in the aforementioned tome, and the risk identified as "1.1" is the electrical contact risk. You will find 1.1 in the upper-right-hand corner of the figure. All of the other risks pale by comparison and lie below and to the left of the electrical contact risk. The scales are logarithmic, so differences in risk assesments are larger than they appear. Patented Novinium technology reduces exposure to this risk in several ways. First the period of time that injection bottles are connected to energized cables is considerably less that with older approaches. The probability that a leak will occur is related to the length of time that a feed or a soak bottle is connected to a cable. Whether utilizing Novinium's patented sustained pressure rejuvenation (SPR) or the older unsustained pressure rejuvenation (UPR), Novinium's patented catalyst technology eliminates the need for a soak period completely. Approaches that don't utilize Novinium's patented catalyst technology require soak periods of 60 days or more for most 7-strand and 19-strand conductors. Utilizing Novinium technology typically reduces the exposure to leaking fluids over 60 times. When UPR is utilized Novinium also uses patent pending technology to mitigate the probability of injection port flashover. The picture nearby shows a low amperage laboratory flashover. The mitigation technology is called a reticular flash preventer or RFP. This issue and the solution are described in some detail at http://www.novinium.com/pdf/papers/Advancements_in_200-amp_injection_elbows.pdf. My advice to you is to never compromise safety. State-of-the-art patented and patent pending technology, soak-free injection processes, and RFP flash-over prevention are available only from Novinium and our partners. Minimize your exposure, Thermo

Google Tech Talks March 28, 2007 ABSTRACT The program aims to bring over 175kW of residential solar power to 50+ homes in the Mountain View, Los Altos, Menlo Park & Woodside communities. SolarCity is offering a substantial discount for homeowners and businesses who purchase solar through this program, giving it the possibilty of being one of the largest residential solar co-op purchases to date. The purpose of the talk is to inform googlers about the benefits and economics of solar, the technologies that SolarCity is using, and to learn about the co-op program itself. Similar public meetings have already been held for local residents, and have attracted a fair bit of local media attention,...

Adam from HoneyBox (http://www.honeybox.ca/) built this stunning off-grid shipping container cabin on top of a mountain in British Columbia, Canada. He's got 800 Watts of solar panels to power his 12-volt system for lights, outlets, and a water pump. He has a wood stove for heat, propane for the fridge, hot water, and cooktop, and he has a composting toilet from Sun-Mar. For water, he has a well and a rainwater catchment system, and he uses both to fill 2 large water tanks for showering and washing dishes but he doesn't yet have a filter for the rainwater and the well water is ferrous so he brings in drinking water for now. One of the main challenges of building with shipping containers is trying to avoid water leaks along the seams where the containers are joined together. Once the clamps are in place, there's a 3 inch gap between containers. Adam installed a mechanical gutter along the seams on the roof to divert water off the roof, and he has a second gutter underneath it to catch any leaks from the first gutter. So far he hasn't had any water issues. You can avoid leaks by building a roof over the containers. The cabin is insulated with spray foam insulation, which adheres to the steel walls and helps avoid condensation problems that might arise with fibreglass batts. Adam built this structure as a studio to demonstrate one of the many ways that shipping containers can be used to create unique living spaces. He doesn't live in it full-time.
